Wallace County, KS Youth Receives 2012 Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship

Date Posted: August 14, 2012

Manhattan, KS—Zane Sloan of Sharon Springs, has received the 2012 Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship, awarded by the Kansas Wheat Growers Research Foundation.

The scholarship, established in 2009, will award Sloan $500 toward his enrollment at Kansas State University where he will pursue a dual major in agronomy and agricultural business.

Sloan graduated from Wallace County High School in May where he maintained a 3.735 grade point average.

He was the National Honor Society Parliamentarian, a Big Brother mentor and a 12 year member of 4-H, where he served as an Officer, Extension Council Representative and on various committees.

These leadership positions, combined with his academic achievements and career objectives focused around the field of agriculture make Sloan a great representative of the Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship.

"I am very honored to receive this scholarship because I have always wanted to come back to western Kansas and farm," Sloan says.

"Winning this agriculture-related scholarship helps build my confidence to achieve that lifelong goal."

The Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship was established through a fund in memory of Herbert W. Clutter, a farmer from Holcomb and the first president of the National Association of Wheat Growers.

The history of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers and the Kansas Wheat Commission is enriched with the memory and lasting leadership of Clutter and his family.

"Herb's enthusiasm for the wheat industry serves as an excellent example to young adults as they take this next step in their lives," Henry says.

"It is an honor and privilege to offer this scholarship in his name and to share Herb Clutter's vision, hard work and sense of community with the next generation."

Applicants for the annual Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship must be incoming freshman from Kansas who will be full-time students at any two or four-year, Kansas college or university.

They should plan to pursue a career in the field of agriculture.

The 2013 Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship application will be available this fall and will be due Friday, February 1, 2013.

Applications and additional information about the scholarship can be found on the Kansas Wheat website at kansaswheat.org.
