Abengoa Participates in Project to Produce Biomass Biofuels

Date Posted: February 14, 2013

Seville—Abengoa, the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainable development in the energy and environment sectors, is participating in a project to develop a pilot plant that will produce second-generation biofuels using a new technology.

The objective of the project is to use biomass to obtain biofuels that have similar properties to liquid fuels derived from oil.

The biofuel that results from this process, which is very similar to petrol, kerosene and diesel mixes, could be directly used in existing combustion engines without having to adapt them.

This project forms part of an extensive research program that Abengoa is developing to produce biofuels from renewable sources.

Some of these programs have developed into specific projects, such as the program to produce biofuels from agricultural waste and municipal solid waste, which Abengoa has been working on for a long time.

The Spanish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Competitiveness has supported the project, providing funding to develop it through the “Innpacto” program, which promotes cooperation between research institutions and companies in order to carry out R&D+i projects.

The initiative forms part of Abengoa’s strategic lines of research, to develop alternative and sustainable production methods for biofuels, an area in which the company is already a leader in national and international projects in collaboration with other major research centers.

The research work currently being carried out in the field of biofuels is aimed at developing new sources of energy in order to complement or substitute fossil fuels obtained from oil.

Abengoa’s R&D+i area, through Abengoa Research, is working to develop projects with huge innovative potential and the company heads up numerous programs that involve world-leading research centers and strategic partners.

Innovation has been at the heart of the company from the outset and has enabled it to maintain a competitive advantage in its activity sectors.
