Cargill to Convert Soybean Oil to Electrical Insulation Fluid at Wichita, KS Plant

Date Posted: May 20, 2011

Wichita, KS—Cargill has made a $2.6 million investment in its existing oils production facility in Wichita to enable the company to produce renewable electrical insulation fluid from soybean oil at the site.

Cargill has operated its Dressing, Sauces and Oils business in Wichita since 1981. Now at this site the company – as part of its Industrial Oils and Lubricants business – also will manufacture Cooper Power Systems Envirotemp™ FR3™ dielectric fluid, a non-toxic and biodegradable fluid used widely in energy line transformers to increase the performance of transformers during peak energy use periods.

The primary customer to be served by the new operations will be Cooper Power Systems, a global manufacturer of medium- and high-voltage electrical equipment.

“We are always searching for new ways to use plant derived materials in our work with industrial customers to improve their products,” said Dave Roesser, general manager of Cargill’s Industrial Oils and Lubricants group.

“We collaborated with Cooper Power Systems to produce FR3 fluid and the expansion of our facility in Wichita will allow us to meet the company’s increasing demand for the fluid.”

“FR3 fluid is rapidly gaining broader acceptance by electrical equipment customers globally,” explained Mike Stoessl, president, Cooper Power Systems, a division of Cooper Industries plc.

“Cargill’s capabilities have enabled the seamless supply of the fluid to our growing customer base.”

“The addition of Envirotemp FR3 to the existing Cargill Wichita vegetable oil refinery aligns with our commitment and vision to create high performing products that are safe and that protect the environment,” said Kameron Knudson, oil refinery superintendent of the Dressings, Sauces, & Oils facility in Wichita.

“This expansion is a direct result of the increasing customer demand that we have seen over the past several years and our desire to build lasting and value-added partnerships with our customers.”

Along with Cargill Dressings, Sauces and Oils and Cargill Industrial Oils and Lubricants, Cargill Meat Solutions has been headquartered in Wichita since 1979.

Seven Cargill businesses are headquartered at the Main Street offices, including Cargill Beef, Cargill Pork, Cargill Value Added Meats – Retail, Cargill Value Added Meats – Food Service, Cargill Regional Beef, Cargill Case Ready and Cargill Food Distribution.

Cargill also has a Horizon Milling facility in Wichita. In total, Cargill has approximately 1,100 Wichita-based employees.
