Clean Fuels Development Coalition and Governors' Ethanol Coalition to Hold EPA Workshop on Applying Greenhouse Gas Standards to Biofuels

Date Posted: August 7, 2008

The Clean Fuels Development Coalition, in Cooperation with the Governors' Ethanol Coalition, is holding a workshop featuring key representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C. on August 19, 2008.

The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 set new renewable fuel requirements for the US.

One of the key provisions in EISA requires the Agency to apply specific lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction standards for renewable fuels.

EPA is currently developing a methodology that meets the EISA requirements.

These efforts build on a substantial amount of work the Agency has already conducted in this area, beginning with the analysis of the lifecycle GHG impact of the renewable fuel volumes as established in the Energy Policy Act of 2005.

The Agency is continuing to further refine and improve the analyses in preparation for issuance of a notice of proposed rulemaking which is scheduled for publication this fall.

The workshop will focus on the progress of these efforts by the Office of Transportation and Air Quality (OTAQ) and provide industry with a preview of where EPA is headed in the development of final regulations.

Given the importance of lifecycle analysis to the success of the RFS2 program and the complexity of this work, the Agency has and continues to work closely with the many interested stakeholders.

EPA's Director for the Office of Transportation and Air Quality, Margo Oge and key professional staff will provide an update on the agency's efforts to development and apply these lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) assessment tools.

The workshop will be held at the JW Marriott Hotel at 14th and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW from 2:30 - 5:00pm.

There is no charge for the workshop but seating is limited and an RSVP is required.
