GROWMARK Announces 2014 Illinois Essay Contest Winner

Bloomington, ILMikaela Wieland of Princeville, Ill., has been named the Illinois state winner of the 2014 GROWMARK essay contest for FFA members.
The theme of this year’s contest was “Promoting Sustainability and Conservation of Natural Resources.”
In her contest entry, Wieland said: “Sustainability is not a short-term fix, but a lasting implementation. In a country whose traditions surround the industry of agriculture, it is critical that farmers create a future wherein they can continue to provide food for the world.”
Wieland is a student at Princeville High School and a member of the Princeville FFA chapter.
Her FFA advisor is Douglas Nelson. As the contest winner, Wieland will receive a $500 award from GROWMARK at the Illinois FFA State Convention, held in Springfield during June.
The Princeville FFA chapter will also receive a $300 award in honor of her accomplishment to help future students.
Four state runners-up will each receive a $125 award.
The runners-up and their FFA chapters are, in alphabetical order: Leah Carter, Fairfield FFA, Fairfield, Ill.; Morgan Dodson, Nashville FFA, Nashville, Ill.; Megan Magsamen, Monticello FFA, White Heath, Ill.; and Jonah Wilson, Paxton-Buckley-Loda FFA, Paxton, Ill.
This is the twenty-first year for the program, sponsored by the GROWMARK System and FS member cooperatives, in conjunction with state FFA leaders, to help young people develop their writing skills, learn about current issues in agriculture, and understand the unique role of cooperatives.
