The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued its 2013 Planting Intentions and Quarterly Grain Stocks reports. University of Illinois Agricultural Economist Darrel Good analyzes the data from the reports in this 10:30 podcast.
Corn growers intend to plant 97.282 million acres of corn for all purposes in 2013, up slightly from last year and 6 percent higher than in 2011. Soybean planted area for 2013 is estimated at 77.126 million acres, down slightly from last year but the fourth highest on record, if realized. All wheat planted area for 2013 is estimated at 56.4 million acres, up 1 percent from 2012. The 2013 winter wheat planted area, at 42.0 million acres, is 2 percent above last year and up slightly from the previous estimate.
In the Grain Stocks report, corn stocks in all positions on March 1, 2013 totaled 5.40 billion bushels, down 10 percent from March 1, 2012. Soybeans stored in all positions on March 1, 2013 totaled 999 million bushels, down 27 percent from March 1, 2012. All wheat stored in all positions on March 1, 2013 totaled 1.23 billion bushels, up 3 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks are estimated at 237 million bushels, up 9 percent from last March.
