GEAPS-KSU Distance Learning Course 542 ... Electrical Safety for Grain and Processing Facilities ... Enrollment Extended to April 5

Date Posted: April 5, 2010

To allow more industry professionals to participate in the courses, GEAPS and KSU have extended the registration deadline for GEAPS 580: Hiring and Retaining Good Employees in the Grain Industry and GEAPS 542: Electrical Safety for Grain and Processing Facilities to April 5.

There's still time to sign up for the latest courses from GEAPS-KSU, but the clock is ticking. Registration closes at midnight April 5 for GEAPS 580: Hiring and Retaining Good Employees in the Grain Industry and GEAPS 542: Electrical Safety for Grain and Processing Facilities.

Electrical safety is essential to the operation of a safe and secure grain facility.

To that end, the Grain Elevator and Processing Society (GEAPS) and Kansas State University (KSU) once again is offering GEAPS 542: Electrical Safety for Grain and Processing Facilities, in order to provide industry workers with basic, comprehensive electrical safety knowledge.

Because electrical safety touches just about every area of a facility, GEAPS-KSU course developers have made sure the course of study includes lectures on a wide range of topics to provide students with the most complete information possible.

Dedicated to the memory of David Brown, who died in 1975 in a grain facility explosion, this course will provide a basic understanding of electrical safety requirements for grain elevators and processing facilities.

GEAPS 542 is led by Doug Forst, president, CMC Industrial Electronics.

Week by week, here's what you'll learn:

Week 1

Fires and Explosions: Causes of fires and explosions that occur in grain facilities and how they relate to electrical safety.

Equipment Standards: Basics of the electrical standards for grain facilities.

Week 2

Different Standards for Different Areas: How to determine the electrical classification of different areas of a grain facility.

Electric Motors: Electric motors used at grain facilities; how to select the correct motor for a classified area.

Week 3

Intrinsically Safe Systems: "Intrinsically safe" systems and their uses in grain facilities.

Week 4

Audits: Determining area classifications, evaluating equipment and bringing unsafe areas into compliance.

Selecting an Electrical Contractor: The process of selecting contractor to perform work at a grain facility.

Week 5
