Kansas June 26 Wheat Harvest Report: Many Farmers Begin Harvest Thanks to Low Humidity and Hot TemperaturesDate Posted: June 26, 2008 June 26, 2008 June 26 Harvest Report Kansas Wheat Harvest Report: This is day six of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas City Board of Trade, DeBruce Grain, the Kansas Grain & Feed Association and Kansas Wheat. Low humidity, a strong breeze and hot temperatures the last few days allowed many farmers throughout Kansas to finally begin their 2008 wheat harvest on Wednesday. It was the first full day of harvest in the Durham area, according to Curtis Frick, manager of Agri Producers, Inc. Several days of wet weather has caused variations in wheat quality, with protein ranging from 9-11.5% and test weights averaging 59-60 pounds.
The Durham location has taken in about 100,000 bushels. Test weight on the 10,000 bushels taken in averaged about 59 pounds per bushel. Dirk Schneider, location manager at United Plains Ag in Tribune, says harvest started Wednesday with a few trucks trickling across the scales. Test weights have averaged 60 pounds per bushel so far, with no yield or protein results yet. Meanwhile, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers president Joe Kejr began cutting Wednesday for neighbors in the Salina area. He reports test weights of about 61 pounds, and protein levels ranging from 11.2-13.6%. Fields cut thus far are exceeding 50 bushels per acre. Doug Locke, manager, Woodson County Coop Association, Yates Center, says harvest began in earnest Wednesday, with about 25,000 bushels taken in. Test weight ranges from 55-58 pounds per bushel with 9.7-10% protein on average. Early yield reports range from 20-45 bushels per acre. Farmers are having difficulty fighting mud to get the wheat out. Jay Garetson, manager of Providence Grain near Sublette, reports that 100,000 bushels of wheat has been taken in the last three days. Test weights range from 50-60 pounds per bushel, but protein content is excellent, averaging 13%. In the Wichita area, Jeff Conard at the Andale Farmers Co-op, Sedgwick, says four good days of cutting have occurred at his location, and about 380,000 bushels of grain have been received. Test weights range from 55 to 64 pounds per bushel, with yields ranging from 30 to 70 bushels per acre. In Russell County, Kim Pratt says the Gorham location of United Ag Service has taken in about 700,000 bushels, with Wednesday being the biggest day by far. Test weights are averaging 62 pounds per bushel, and protein samples are at the industry’s 11.7% benchmark.
