Date Posted: June 30, 2008

This is day seven of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas City Board of Trade, DeBruce Grain, the Kansas Grain & Feed Association and Kansas Wheat.

Wheat harvest is inching northward throughout Kansas, as farmers in some areas are winding up and others are just beginning.

Kansas Association of Wheat Growers secretary/treasurer David Schemm, Sharon Springs, says harvest in Wallace County is two to three days away.

Meanwhile, Ken Jameson, manager of the Garden City Co-op, says the Ulysses location of the 21-location cooperative is about 40% complete, with test weights averaging 59 pounds per bushel and protein levels about 12%. Yields average 35-40 bushels per acre.

Near Garden City, Jameson says harvest is about 5% done, with Finney County farmers averaging 45-50 bushels per acre, test weights of 60# and protein 11-12%.

Jerald Kemmerer, manager of the Dodge City Co-op, says harvest is about 50% complete in Ford County.

Test weights are averaging between 57-60 pounds per bushel, with good protein content. Yields are better than farmers expected, with 40-50 bushel averages and some farmers getting 80 bushel per acre wheat.

The Dodge City location has taken in about 3.6 million bushels.

Bill Burton, grain merchandiser at Midland Marketing, says the Hays location has taken in about 175,000 bushels so far, with other locations taking in considerably more grain.

Test weights are averaging 62 pounds per bushel and protein content is 11-12%. Grain yields are better than average, with some 60-70 bushel per acre yields reported.

In the Hutchinson vicinity, harvest is half over, according to KAWG director Marvin Schlatter, who works at ADM Grain, Hutchinson.

Test weights are average; protein is slightly above average, Schlatter says.

The Midway Coop in Osborne has had a few strong days of harvest, according to manager Dean Oliver.

Test weights range from 61-64 pounds per bushel, with protein averaging 12%.

Oliver reports that farmers are happy with yields, thus far.

Harvest is patchy in Osage County due to persistent wet weather, according to Gary Dayhoff with Dayhoff Elevator, Inc., Osage City.

Test weights are averaging 57-58 pounds per bushel on limited cutting, with preliminary yields between 30-40 bushels per acre.

Harvest is wrapping up in Barber County, reports Dennis Carroll, operations manager at OK Coop in Kiowa.

With a few fields yet to cut, the coop has taken in 3.3 million bushels, with 60-64 pound test weights the norm and an average 11% protein. Factoring in severe hail in locations, the crop averaged about 40 bushels per acre.
