MABA Criticizes Gov. Granholm Call to Avoid Eating Meat

Date Posted: March 17, 2010

LansingMichigan Agri-Business Association President Jim Byrum criticized March 17 Gov. Jennifer Granholm's resolution calling on Michigan citizens to not eat meat and asked her to retract her resolution and apologize to Michigan's agriculture sector and the men and women who work in it.

"Gov. Jennifer Granholm's resolution is quite possibly the most meat-headed idea yet coming from a tone-deaf administration that is out of touch with agriculture and the jobs and opportunities we provide to Michigan citizens," Byrum said.

"Gov. Granholm should be supporting one of the few bright spots in Michigan's economy instead of attacking it.

"She should do the right thing, retract her resolution and apologize to the hardworking men and women who provide food to Michigan and the world."

Byrum demanded that Granholm rescind her resolution declaring Saturday, March 20, a so-called "meat-less" day, and publicly apologize to Michigan's agriculture sector, which employs more than a million people and generates more than $71.3 billion every year.

Livestock and dairy account for roughly 65 percent of Michigan's total agriculture output.

Michigan has the nation's second most diverse agricultural economy, only behind California, and is a global leader in a range of products.
