North American Millers' Association Meets in Palm Coast, FL, March 23-26

More than 180 members from the North American Millers’ Association (NAMA) attended the 2013 Spring Division Meetings, March 23-26, at The Hammock Beach Resort, Palm Coast, FL.

On Saturday, March 23, members of the technical committee met, which was later followed by an evening welcome reception for all the attendees.

On Sunday morning, March 24, two key sessions were held concerning the corn division business meeting, which was presided over by George Allard, NAMA corn division chairman and vice president and general manager, Bunge Milling, Inc., St. Louis, MO, and the oat milling business meeting, which was presided over by Cullen Harder, NAMA oat division chairman and procurement manager, Grain Millers, Inc., Eden Prairie, MN.

An international trade committee meeting also was held during Sunday afternoon, which was presided over by Jack Cwach, NAMA international trade committee chairman and vice president, international milling and animal nutrition, ADM Milling Company, Overland Park, KS.

The Oat Milling session continued during Sunday afternoon, March 24, with the following reports:

• World Oat Outlook, by Randy Strychar, president, Ag Commodity Research, North Vancouver, BC, Canada.

• Checkoffs – What Next?, by Shawna Mathieson, executive director, Prairie Oat Growers Association, Regina, SK, Canada.

• Oat Genome Research – A Collaboration, by Rick Schwein, senior vice president, and Bruce Roskens, director of crop science, Grain Millers, Inc., Eden Prairie, MN.

• Microbiological Science in the Mill, by Dr. Virginia Deibel, director, microbiological consulting nutritional chemistry and food safety, Covance, Inc., Madison, WI.

A reception was held that evening in the Ocean Ballroom at the Hammock Beach Resort, which was followed by the opportunity to network and play billiards.

On Monday, March 25, welcoming remarks were made by James Meyer, NAMA chairman and president, Italgrani, U.S.A., St. Louis, MO.

Several presentations also were given, which was presided over by Bill Keynes, NAMA soft wheat division chairman, and secretary/treasurer, Keynes Bros., Inc., Logan, OH.

Presentations included:

Take a Stand for Common Sense, Christine Cochran, executive director, Grain Foods Foundation, Washington, DC; and The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Update, Ricardo Carvajal, director, Hyman, Phelps & McNamara, P.C., Washington, DC.

The morning session wrapped up with a presentation about Impact of Weather Extremes and Climate Change on Midwest Agriculture, Dr. Eugene Takle, director, Climate Science Initiative, and professor of atmospheric science and agricultural meteorology, Iowa State University, Ames.

A golf outing was held on Monday afternoon, March 25, at the Ocean Course, Hammock Beach Resort.

Along with a golf tournament trophy presentation, a reception also was held Monday evening in the Ocean Ballroom at the resort.

On Tuesday, March 26, members of the soft wheat division held their business meeting, which was followed by the general session in which several presentations were given.

This general session also was presided over by Bill Keynes, secretary/treasurer, Keynes Bros., Inc., Logan, OH.

Those presentations included:

• What’s All the Talk About? Social Media and Biotech Wheat, Alex Wendel, Global Prairie, Kansas City, MO.

• Canadian Soft Wheat Crop Outlook, Scott Krakar, wheat merchant, London Agricultural Commodities, Inc., London, ON, Canada.

Tuesday’s morning session wrapped up with a favorable Soft Wheat Crop Report and Forecast consisting of the following panel members: Chair – Connie Barr, vice president/customer service, Siemer Milling Company, Teutopolis, IL.

Carl Schwinke, vice president grain, Siermer Milling Company, Teutopolis, IL, a new panel member who provided reports for Illinois, Kentucky, and Missouri.

Grover Van Hoose, grain buyer, Mennel Milling Company, Fostoria, OH, who provided reports for Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, and West Virginia.

Shawn Blume, soft wheat merchandiser, Lansing Grain Company, Overland Park, KS, who provided reports for Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

Steve Gorman, vice president/sales leader, Horizon Milling LLC/Cargill, Minneapolis, MN, who provided reports for North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.

Sarah Ballou, commodity merchandiser, ConAgra Mills, Omaha, NE, a new panel member who provided reports for Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas.

Also attending the division meetings from NAMA were: Jim Bair, vice president; Sherri Lehman, director of government relations; Terri Long, director of membership, meetings, and communication and corporate secretary/treasurer; and Lyndsey Valentine, administrative assistant.
