Dan DeRouchey, Manager of the Berthold Farmers Elevator at Berthold, ND, was elected President of the North Dakota Grain Dealers Association at the organization’s recent convention in Fargo, ND.

He had previously served as First Vice President.

Paul Lautenschlager, Manager of the Beach Co-op Grain Co at Beach, ND was elected First Vice President.

David Fiebiger, Manager of the Finley Farmers Elevator at Finley, ND, was elected Second Vice President.

Carrol Duerr, Manager of Colfax Farmers Elevator, Inc. at Colfax, ND and Steve Hepper, Manager of Hubbard Feeds, Inc. at Bismarck, ND were newly-elected to the Association’s nine-man Board of Directors.

Clyde Krebs of Glen Ullin, ND was re-elected.

Program topics at the convention include grain contracting, grain elevator financing, managing market volatility, consolidation in the seed industry, and the future of ethanol.

Almost 1000 people attended the convention, which includes a trade show of 80 firms that provides products and services to the grain elevator industry.

Through resolutions adopted, the Grain Dealers requested consistency in commodity checkoff procedures and compensation for administrative expenses.

The Association expressed opposition to the union card check bill at the national level.

The next convention will be held in Fargo, ND on January 17-19, 2010.

The ND Grain Dealers Association was formed in 1911 to work collectively on issues of common interest to grain elevators.

There are about 400 grain elevators in the state, down from 600 25 years ago and 2000 in the early 1900s.

The Association operates a safety program of elevator inspections and employee training, a self-funded health trust and an educational foundation.

Members receive publications and attend educational meetings such as the annual convention.
