Purdue Extension Safety Specialist Presents Grain Bin Rescue Technology at Boswell, IN Volunteer Fire Dept.

Date Posted: February 7, 2011

West Lafayette, IN—In light of the recent spike in grain entrapments, Purdue Extension grain safety specialist and certified farm accident rescue instructor Steve Wettschurack will present a new Liberty Grain Rescue Tube to the Boswell Volunteer Fire Department and community on Feb. 9.

At the presentation, which takes place at 6 p.m. at the fire department, Wettschurack will discuss grain safety issues and how the tube gives first responders a better chance to rescue those engulfed in grain. He also will announce 12 grain bin safety courses scheduled throughout Indiana.

The grain rescue tubes help first responders shield partially trapped victims from becoming engulfed in grain.

"As I travel the state giving grain bin safety demonstrations, I see the need communities have for the proper equipment to use in grain entrapment rescues," Wettschurack said.

"Boswell is unique because they are a small community, but they saw the need and worked hard to get the funding together for this grain rescue tube."

Boswell Chase Grain helped sponsor the tube.

First responders, farmers, grain elevator operators, news media and the general public are invited to attend the presentation.

"There has been great interest in Purdue Extension grain bin rescue training, and in the last several months the rescue tubes have become a device many fire departments are considering and are in need of," Wettschurack said.

"At the presentation, I'll talk about why the device is so important and how it works."

The Boswell Volunteer Fire Department is at 307 W. North St.
