RFA Chairman Testifies to the Importance of U.S. Ethanol Industry to Agriculture, Rural America

Date Posted: January 10, 2007

Washington, DC -– Appearing before the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee today, Aventine Renewable Energy, Inc. CEO and Renewable Fuels Association Chairman Ron Miller detailed the dramatic impacts the U.S. ethanol industry’s rapid growth is having on American farmers and rural communities.

“Ethanol today is the single most important value-added market for farmers,” said Miller.

“The increased demand for grain used in ethanol processing has increased farm income, created jobs in the agricultural sector, and revitalized numerous rural communities where ethanol biorefineries have been located."

In his testimony, Miller noted the economic impacts the nearly 5 billion gallons of ethanol produced and sold in this meant to the country, particularly in rural areas.

Those impacts include:

-- An additional $41.1 billion to gross national output

-- The creation of 160,231 jobs in all sectors of the economy

-- An increase in household income of $6.7 billion, money that flows directly into consumers pockets.

“The incentives Congress has provided to spur the development of a domestic ethanol industry are beginning to pay dividends,” said Miller.

“The continuation of this partnership between public policy and private industry is essential to realizing all the benefits greater ethanol production and use hold.”
