Date Posted: February 5, 2013

Don't miss your chance to learn more about grain quality management, electrical safety or equipment maintenance. Registration for the upcoming GEAPS/Kansas State Distance Education Program courses closes at midnight tonight, Tuesday, Feb. 5.

GEAPS 530: Quality Management Systems introduces students to quality management systems as they are used in agricultural storage environments, and provides strategies for integrating these systems into standard operating procedures and normal business activities.

Upon completion, students will be able to do a basic quality analysis of their operation and identify points where physical quality or economics are impacted.

They will have the skills to create their own food safety plan and develop a quality management system.

GEAPS 542: Electrical Safety provides students with a basic understanding of electrical safety requirements for grain elevators and processing facilities.

Topics include general electrical standards in a grain facility, requirements for electric motors and lighting, safety standards, how to perform an audit, how to identify the classifications in a facility and how to hire qualified electrical contractors.

GEAPS 554: Grain Elevator Equipment Maintenance I covers the proper and safe function, monitoring, adjustments, maintenance and repair of equipment used in everyday grain facility operations.

This includes the functions, parts, components and troubleshooting of bucket elevators, drag conveyors, distributors, valving and gates.

Lectures will also touch on dust suppression and collection, power drive transmissions, screw conveyors and bin sweeps, maintenance methodology and preventive maintenance techniques.

Not only do the three courses offer invaluable knowledge, but participation in two of the three courses will count towards the completion of a GEAPS/K-State Credential.

GEAPS 530: Quality Management Systems counts towards the Grain Operations Management Credential. GEAPS 554: Grain Elevator Equipment Maintenance I confers credit towards the Specialist in Grain Handling Equipment Management Credential for those who have completed the Grain Operations Management Credential.
