St. Paul, MN—Robert Deraas, a veteran food and agribusiness leader, has been named president of CHS Sunflower, a value-added business of CHS Inc., the nation’s leading farmer-owned cooperative and an energy, grains and foods company.
Deraas, currently CHS Sunflower operations manager, will assume the position July 1 and succeeds Jim Krogh who is retiring after nearly four decades in the sunflower processing industry.
CHS Sunflower is the world’s largest processor and distributor of confectionery sunflowers and is a leader in the U.S. domestic edible sunflower seed market.
It exports sunflower kernel products to Western Europe and the Pacific Rim and supplies in-shell product to the Mediterranean region and the Middle East.
CHS Sunflower is a major domestic supplier of wild bird foods, under the Feathered Friend® and Chirp® brands and has a hybrid development program for the improvement of market and agronomic traits of confectionery sunflowers.
“This is an exciting time for CHS Sunflower as we continue to grow our global platform,” said Scott Sinclair, senior vice president Country Operations Administration.
“Robert’s depth of experience and strategic leadership with CHS, as well as other agricultural foods operations, will be invaluable as we expand our sunflower production and processing presence.”
As CHS Sunflower operations manager since 2006, Deraas has been responsible for the company’s human and bird food processing facilities at Grandin, N.D., and Hazel, Minn., as well as its sunflower roasting facility at Fargo, N.D. Prior to joining CHS, he served as operations manager for J.D. Heiskell and Company, a Tulare, Calif., dairy feed company, and was general manager for Pacific International Rice Mills Inc., of Woodland, Calif., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch Companies.
His career also has included positions in the seed and agricultural inputs sectors. Deraas holds a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural economics from North Dakota State University, Fargo.
He also holds numerous business and industry certifications.
In February, CHS announced in it has formed CHS AGRO, a sunflower marketing joint venture with Adecoagro.
The joint venture will be based at Pehuajo, Argentina, in the heart of that country’s sunflower production region
CHS AGRO will grow and process sunflower kernel and in-shell products for global marketing and distribution by CHS.
In addition to Deraas’ appointment, CHS has expanded the role of Wesley Dick, CHS Sunflower sales manager, to include responsibility for the marketing of sunflower kernel and in-shell products from the CHS AGRO joint venture.
Dick has been involved in human food sunflower sales management along with foreign procurement since 1992.
