The GSI Group Introduces RES-Q Trainer to Prevent Grain Engulfments

Date Posted: July 29, 2008

Assumption, IL—Headlines continue to tout the strength of the grain market and while growers endeavor to meet the demands of the marketplace, they continue to face the hazards inherent in grain storage and handling.

Harvest season brings heightened attention and awareness to the dangers of grain engulfment.

Every year there are heart-wrenching fatalities and serious injuries.

Because lives are at stake, it is important to teach accident prevention as well as train for the proper protocol when accidents do occur.

GSI has a strong history of commitment to safety and safety training in the industry and has donated bins to serve as “engulfment simulators” at several permanent locations.

However, recognizing that safety training must be accessible to more people, GSI has developed a mobile engulfment simulator for on-site hands-on training.

GSI’s mobile “RES-Q” trainer travels to dealer locations, allowing dealers to offer convenient, meaningful and relevant safety events for their customers.

This mobile unit will be on-site at the 2008 Farm Progress Show to be held August 26-28 in Boone, IA and will also travel to various locations across the U.S. to reach the widest possible audience.

The RES-Q trainer is a unique piece of mobile equipment that utilizes a seven foot pivot-mounted hopper tank with popup design.

It also includes a three inch air system for easy filling and unloading of the grain.

GSI’s safety manager developed the simulator and integrated it into an overall safety training program that includes both classroom style lecture and hands-on training for a grain engulfment emergency.

Attendees at the re-enactments and safety training have included dealers, their customers and local rescue personnel.

The trainer and supervised training program create a safe and controlled environment for relevant and critical rescue training that teaches not only prevention, but the proper actions to take in the event of an actual grain engulfment emergency.

Learning about safe grain handling can help prevent grain engulfment.

And knowing the proper procedures to follow if an actual emergency arises can save lives.

The RES-Q trainer was also on site at the GEAPS Exchange in Omaha, NE earlier this year.

Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive from those attending the tradeshow as well as those attending in-field training sessions.

GSI’s mobile RES-Q trainer offers an excellent opportunity for everyone involved in agriculture to benefit from handson training.

Countless accidents can be prevented and lives saved through the valuable education and experience offered through re-enactment training.
