The Scoular Co. Acquires R.O. Mayes Co. Grain Handling Facility in Petersburg, VA
Date Posted: July 16, 2013
Omaha, NE—The Scoular Company announced July 16 its acquisition of the assets of R.O. Mayes Co.
Scoular’s acquisition included a grain-handling facility located in Petersburg, Va., approximately 25 miles south of Richmond.
Terms of the transaction were not announced.
John Messerich, Scoular Senior Vice President, said the company will continue previous owner Mike Mayes’ commitment to area farmers.
“We’re pleased to have Mike and his staff join Scoular and to continue the business that Mike’s family has grown over the course of the past 60-plus years,” said Messerich.
Mayes will serve as general manager of the facility under Scoular’s ownership.
The newly acquired country elevator will be incorporated into Scoular’s North American grain marketing network of more than 70 offices and facilities throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
Messerich said the Petersburg facility complements the company’s grain-handling business in Windsor, Va., which Scoular began operating in 2006.
He added that the company plans to improve the Petersburg location over time to increase its handling capacity.
Mayes said he’s excited about Scoular’s presence in Petersburg.
“Working with Scoular allows me to continue growing the business that my father started in 1948,” said Mayes.
“Under Scoular’s ownership, we can continue to serve our area farmers like we always have, picking up grain on the farm as well as having farmers deliver to the elevator.
"We can also leverage Scoular’s size, experience, and expertise to bring new marketing opportunities to our customers.”
