USA Rice Federation Completes EU Meetings on Rice Market Access

Date Posted: February 4, 2010

Brussels, Belgium—A USA Rice delegation completed two days of meetings today on rice market access in the European Union (EU).

The delegation met with staff and members of COCERAL, the EU trade association for the feed industry, to discuss progress towards adoption of a low-level presence policy for genetically-engineered traits in food and feed that are not approved by the EU, including the LL601 trait.

USA Rice presented staff from the Directorates General for Trade and Agriculture with the 2009 test results for U.S. rice that showed no presence of the LL601 trait, and asked for support within the inter-agency EU process to remove the current requirement for origin testing of U.S. long-grain rice.

Delegation members also discussed the dissatisfaction of the U.S. industry with the EU's duty regime on brown rice.
