USGC Applauds EU Approval of Syngenta MIR604 Biotech Corn

Date Posted: December 4, 2009

The European Union Commission announced on Monday its approval of Syngenta’s MIR604 corn event for food and feed use, import and processing, allowing the possible movement of U.S. grains into the European Union (EU).

The Commission said in a statement that the MIR604 corn event received a positive safety assessment from the European Food Safety Authority as it underwent the full authorization procedure set up in the EU legislation.

“The clearance of this event opens the door of possibility for U.S. feed ingredients for the current marketing year, including value-added products like distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) and corn gluten, both co-products of U.S. ethanol production,” said Dan Keefe, U.S. Grains Council manager of international operations for DDGS.

“The EU may now be presented with more options for feed ingredients.”

USGC Director of Biotechnology Programs Rebecca Fecitt noted the EU’s zero tolerance policy still remains for unapproved biotech varieties.
