University of Minnesota IPM Training Consortium Offers Integrated Pest Management for Facility Managers and Supervisors CourseDate Posted: February 10, 2010 This course will benefit people who manage or supervise commercial and institutional buildings, including: food processing plants and warehouses; schools; museums; office buildings; cafeterias and hospitals, etc. The course will also benefit site managers who oversee multi-building facilities.
This 11 week course provides stepwise instructions to construct an effective IPM program that prevents pest outbreaks in structures. The training sessions educate participants about: • different IPM components and how they fit together; • strategies for effective use of pest management documentation; • how to assess pest activity in a facility and generate prevention plans; • how to inspect and monitor for maximum pest detection in a facility; • how sanitation and exclusion practices can be used to best effect; • how to determine which pest control options best fit the facility; and, • how to budget for preventative procedures and manage contracts with pest control companies.
Each session includes a practical assignment to review lesson materials; to promote understanding of how to operate an effective pest prevention program, and to encourage participants to adapt appropriate and successful practices in their own facilities.
The course developer and instructor is Dr. Stephen Kells, Assistant Professor in the Department of Entomology at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Kells has 15 years experience in research of structural pests, including five years as a Corporate Technical Director in a major pest control company. Recently, Dr. Kells participated in a team assisting Nestlé Purina and Wal-Mart to develop improved methods of pest prevention (http://www.epa.gov/pesp/strategies/2009/walmart09.htm). Information and principles developed from Dr. Kells’ work is included and highlighted in this new course.
