3rd Quarter 2007 Flour Production Is Largest Output in Six Years

by Josh Flint, Milling Journal editor

Washington, DC--With the Nov. 9 release of the U.S. Census Bureau's Flour Milling Products Report, one thing was clear—2007 is shaping up to be a big year.

The 2007 3rd quarter production was estimated at 108,637,000 cwts., which is the second largest 3rd quarter production on record.

The record was set with 2000's 3rd quarter production of 109,673,000 cwts.

With such a large 2007 3rd quarter output, millers have produced 310,754,000 cwts. thus far.

Barring any significant slowdowns, the industry should break the 4-million-cwt. mark fairly easily—something that hasn't been done since 2001, which had a total of 404,521,000 cwts.

Despite the large 2007 3rd Quarter output, it is unlikely that this year will top the record 2000 production of 421,270,000 cwts. To do so, millers would have to produce 110,516,000 cwts. in the final quarter of 2007.

State Production

Kansas was again the top flour producing state with 9,720,000 cwts. of flour—approximately 1 million cwts. more than the state produced in 2nd quarter.

California had the second-largest 3rd quarter production by an individual state with 8,056,000 cwts.

Minnesota produced 7,777,000 cwts. of flour this quarter, slightly higher than 2nd quarter's 7,324,000 cwts.

Missouri significantly ramped up its production from last quarter. In 2nd quarter, Missouri produced 6,261,000 cwts.; for 3rd quarter, it produced 7,474,000 cwts.
