USDA to Donate Wheat to Support Development Programs in Kenya and Mongolia

Date Posted: April 24, 2006

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that it will donate 25,000 metric tons of wheat to Land O' Lakes for use in the Republic of Kenya, and another 25,000 metric tons to World Vision for use in Mongolia, according to US Wheat Associates.

Both Land O' Lakes and World Vision are private voluntary organizations.

Land O' Lakes will sell the wheat in Kenya and use the proceeds over a 3-year period to implement a dairy development program in the Eastern province of the country.

Project activities include increasing farm-level productivity of smallholder dairy farmers, developing commercially viable and effective dairy producer cooperatives and groups, and forming effective and efficient market linkages between all the stakeholders in the dairy sector in Eastern Kenya.

World Vision will sell the wheat in Mongolia, and use the proceeds to establish learning centers and provide agricultural training, construction of greenhouses and storage facilities, and micro-development enterprises.

The donations will be made under USDA's Food for Progress program, administered by the Foreign Agricultural Service.

The supply period for this donation is fiscal year 2006.

The Food for Progress program provides for donations of agricultural commodities to needy countries to encourage economic or agricultural reforms that foster free enterprise.

This year, USDA expects to donate 560,000 metric tons of U.S. commodities to 28 countries under Food for Progress.
