Due to the high cost of soybean oil, the biodiesel industry has been searching for alternative feedstocks.

Three potential feedstocks—meat and bone meal, dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS), and soapstock—have the potential to produce an estimated 325 million gallons of biodiesel per year (MMGY), based on research being conducted by Michael Haas, research biochemist for the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in Wyndmoor, PA.

Dr. Haas will present a webinar on these alternative biodiesel feedstocks Thursday, March 27, 2 p.m. Central Standard Time.

This webinar will focus on these ARS research projects:

  • Meat and Bone Meal—About 50% of every animal slaughtered for meat produces a material known as meat and bone meal, which is inedible to humans. However, meat and bone meal contain nearly 10% lipid, sufficient to generate an 95 MMGY of biodiesel.
  • DDGS—This co-product from ethanol production could potentially produce more than 200 MMGY.
  • Soapstock—A waste product from the production of edible oil could mean 30 MMGY.

BioFuels Journal Editor Myke Feinman will host this one-hour powerpoint presentation.
