Optimizing Fermentation Monitoring by Using FTIR Spectroscopy
“A breakthrough in rapid fermentation analysis, including infection indicators”

Abstract:
Ethanol production is increasing in volume and at the same time becoming more diverse with new process technology and alternative feed-stocks coming online.

In step with these developments, spectroscopy is receiving increasing attention from the industry.

Near Infrared (NIR) has, for a long period been the preferred method for analyzing whole grain at intake or in grain trading for parameters such as moisture, starch, ethanol yield and test-weight, along with co-products such as DDGS.

The same technology has, in recent years, migrated into the ethanol process (e.g. fermentation).

However, NIR has yet to be fully accepted due to a lack of analytical performance with the instruments used so far.

Taking attention to this, FOSS has through close cooperation with a number of industry leaders have lead to the release of a new tool needed to closely and accurately monitor the fermentation process, including the ever so important infection control.

This technology is called Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR).

The fermentation tank is your money-maker and keeping it running smoothly and efficiently is a major concern.

Knowing what is going on inside is crucial for effective control, but analysis with existing HPLC options is time consuming and to some extent operator dependant – if only fermentation control could be fast, accurate and easy.

New FTIR spectroscopy will provide:

  • Accurate Results - Including the important infection indicators
  • Fast Analysis - Complete analysis within 2 minutes
  • Ease of Use - Place the sample, close the lid and push start. Virtually anyone can operate the unit.
