Plains Grains Inc. Aug. 28 Report: HRW Wheat Harvest Expected to Finish by Early Next Week

The Pacific Northwest's hard red winter wheat harvest is just about complete, according to the Plains Grains Inc. Aug. 28 Harvest Summary.

Montana (92%), Washington (91%), and Idaho (90%) are expected to finish over the weekend or early next week. Less mature, irrigated fields and cooler nighttime temperatures are expected to slightly delay completion.

There are now 378 individual samples in various testing stages. Overall test weight is at 61.5 1b/bu, slightly above last year's average of 60.8. The protein average is 12.1%, compared to 11.3% in 2019.

Preliminary bake data from Texas through Nebraska notes 740 cc is the lowest loaf volume. The quality target is >850 cc, indicating small loaf volume was the result of low protein. When flour protein was 10%-11%, however, loaf volumes quickly increased to over 900 cc.
