Bloomington, IL — Harvest is rolling up: Increased traffic, long hours, new employees, equipment repair, cellphone distractions, and smoking around dump pits can all contribute to unsafe conditions at grain elevators.
The Grain and Feed Association of Illinois Safety, Health and Environmental Services addresses these challenges, especially in receiving pit areas, in its Sept. 4 Update newsletter Harvest Edition.
GFAI encourages employers to share these precautions with employees, as well as the procedures that should be followed at at each receiving pit and vehicle. For a receiving pit safety flier, click here.
"Keep these commonsense procedures in mind and remind all employees of the hazards that exist," GFAI said in the newsletter. "These risks can be greatly reduced with basic communication and awareness of your surroundings."
