USDA January Winter Wheat/Canola Seedings Report

Winter Wheat planted area for harvest in 2021 is estimated at 32.0 million acres, up 5 percent from 2020 and up 2 percent from 2019, according to the USDA January Winter Wheat/Conola Seedings Report released Tuesday, Jan. 12.

This represents the fourth lowest United States acreage on record, according to USDA.

  • Hard Red Winter (HRW) wheat seeded area is expected to total 22.3 million acres, up 4 percent from 2020.
  • Soft Red Winter (SRW) wheat seeded area totals 6.23 million acres, up 12 percent from last year.
  • White Winter wheat seeded area totals 3.48 million acres, down less than 1 percent from 2020.

Durum wheat: Seedings in Arizona and California for 2021 harvest are estimated at a combined 70,000 acres, down 5 percent from 2020 and 41 percent below 2019.

Canola: This report contains the first estimate of 2021 canola seedings for Kansas and Oklahoma.

Acres seeded in Kansas and Oklahoma for 2021 harvest are estimated at a combined 22,000 acres, an increase of 29 percent, or 5,000 acres, from 2020.

If realized, planted acreages in both States would represent the second lowest on record.
