2022 U.S. Off-Farm Grain Storage Report ... No Increase Over 2021

Capacity of off-farm grain storage in the United States totaled 11.823 billion bushels on Dec. 1, 2022, even with the 11.817 billion bushels on the same date in 2021, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Jan. 12 quarterly Grain Stocks report.

The largest increase occurred in Missouri, North Carolina, and South Dakota, where an additional 5 million bushels of capacity were added since Dec. 1, 2021, followed by Ohio (4 million) and Colorado (2 million).

Top Storage States

The top states in off-farm storage capacity include:

• Illinois: 810 facilities, with 1.65 billion bushels – No. 1 in 2022.

• Iowa: 840 facilities (the most in the nation), with 1.52 billion bushels.

• Kansas: 690 facilities, with 1.2 billion bushels.

• Nebraska: 485 facilities, with 990 million bushels.

• Minnesota: 500 facilities, with 820 million bushels.

• Texas: 420 facilities, with 610 million bushels.

• Ohio: 339 facilities, with 475 million bushels.

• North Dakota: 320 facilities, with 460 million bushels.

The top five states accounted for 52% of the nation’s off-farm storage capacity, the same as in 2021.

The number of off-farm grain storage facilities totaled 8,068 on Dec. 1, 2022, down 2% from 8,197 on Dec. 1, 2021.
