Bulk Bag Safety
Bulk Bags are used to store and transport various commodities including grain, seed, fertilizer, and flour.
These bags can weigh in excess of 2,000 lbs. If not stored properly, stacked bags may collapse and cause serious injury or even death.
When handling and storing bulk bags, remember the following safety tips:
- Ensure that forklift operators are properly trained on the proper way to stack bulk bags.
- If placing bulk bags on racks, make sure that they do not exceed the capacity of the rack.
- Avoid triple stacking bulk bags.
- When feasible, cross stack (interlock) the bags with the second layer straddling the space between the first layer.
- Place a pallet or piece of plywood between bags when stacking bags on top of one another.
- Stack bags as straight as possible so that they do not lean.
- If bags are leaning, isolate he area to keep employees away until they can safely be restacked.
- Maintain plenty of space between stacked bags and door or high-traffic areas. Bags may shift and collapse.
