Company Profile
Mid-States Millwright & Builders

Design/build contractor, structural steel fabrication, material handling equipment

History

Grain handlers of all sizes take great care handling, conditioning, and storing corn, soybeans, wheat, and other commodities as efficiently as possible. With that ambition in mind, Mid-States Millwright & Builders has been designing, building, and servicing all types of grain storage facilities for more than 20 years.

Kevin Vier and his wife, Shelley, founded the company in Nevada, IA in 2001. They saw an opportunity to serve the large agricultural market in the heart of the Grain Belt.

As the company grew, the Viers created Mid-States Material Handling & Fabrication in 2011. It was developed to support the company’s millwright division by providing structures and material handling equipment. In 2020, Mid-States Crane & Trucking was launched to expand those services further. Today, all manufacturing and construction support services originate from Mid-States’ 125,000-square-foot facility in Nevada.

After starting with five employees, the companies now employ over 100. “We have been fortunate to have a great team of employees operating in our companies,” says Chief Operating Officer Austin Vier. “Since vertically integrating our operations, we have reorganized the management structure to better direct and maximize the value that we can provide to customers.”

Mid-States’ customers range from large cooperatives and corporate grain handlers to large family farms, food grade facilities, processors, and biofuel facilities.

Mid-States Millwright has built much of its 20-plus-year reputation on millwright and construction services for the grain and feed industry. The company provides design-build general contracting services for greenfield grain storage construction, facility expansions, and also offers maintenance and repair services.

Philosophy

Austin Vier

“We use our knowledge and expertise to meet our customers’ needs wherever they’re located,” says Vier. “We service customers across the nation and have the capability to go anywhere.”

Mid-States attributes much of the company’s success to its core values: hard work, continuous improvement, accountability, quality, teamwork, and integrity. “These core values drive our team to become the best at what we do and deliver those results to our customers,” he says.

“Being one of the largest engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) grain contractors in the nation, we have built long-lasting vendor and supplier relationships,” says Vier.

“By having multiple integrated companies, we have better control on scheduling, quality, efficiency, and overall cost structure. The combination of our supplier relationships and integrated companies allow us to provide the maximum amount of value to the end user,” he explains.

Mid-States devotes many of its resources to Nevada-area schools, churches, and other organizations. It is one of the area’s leading employers and supports local vocational training programs. “We believe in giving back to our community for all of the support they’ve given us over the years. We have been extremely blessed and enjoy having the opportunity to help bless others,” Vier adds.

Material Handling Equipment & Structures

“The organization’s design services have been key to our success.” says Vier. “It all starts with design. We have a talented design team that provides essential support to our construction and manufacturing operations. Our design teams use the latest technology and state-of-the-art equipment to design each product and facility.”

Mid-States Material Handling and Fabrication supports the construction division by providing an array of products.

The structural steel division designs and produces support towers, catwalks, and loadout structures. The company’s material handling division designs and manufactures drag conveyors, belt conveyors, bucket elevators, spouting, and other material handling accessories.

“Our company motto is ‘delivering results, together,’ because we believe our integrated companies and talented team give us the unique opportunity to provide unparalleled value,” says Vier.
