Rural Xenia, IL Man Dies After Fall From Grain Bin on Farm

Xenia, IL — A 61-year-old man died after falling from the top of a 35-foot grain elevator on his farm in rural Xenia, IL, about noon on Friday, Nov. 6, according to a Premier Broadcasting report.

Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon identified the victim as Greg Smith, whose farm is along Beard Road on the Clay-Marion county line.

Kinmundy-Alma Fire Chief Kevin Day says Smith was using a safety belt and a tether, but they were connected to a spout that Day says appears to have come loose from the rest of the elevator, leading to Smith's fall.

No one saw the incident occur. Smith was later found by a family member on the ground with critical injuries.

He later was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
