USDA Grain Transportation Report (6/15): USACE Researches Comprehensive Management of LMR

According to today's USDA Grain Transportation Report, on June 1, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), New Orleans district, announced the launch of its Lower Mississippi River (LMR) Comprehensive Management Study, as authorized by the Water Resources and Development Act (WRDA) of 2020.

The $25 million, 5-year mega-study will identify recommendations for comprehensively managing the system across multiple aspects.

These aspects include reducing hurricane and storm damage, minimizing flood risk, implementing structural and nonstructural flood controls, managing floodplains, optimizing navigation, and other functions, as determined by the Secretary of the Army.

As the study progresses, information updates, outreach opportunities, and public meetings will be available on the New Orleans District’s website.

In 2022, over 32.7 million tons of grain moved southbound to LMR for export (GTR table 9).
