Capacity of off-farm grain storage in the United States totaled 11.9 billion bushels on Dec. 1, 2023, up slightly from the 11.823 billion bushels on the same date in 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Jan. 12 quarterly Grain Stocks report.
The largest increase occurred in Illinois, where an additional 30 million bushels of capacity were added since Dec. 1, 2022, followed by Kansas (20), Iowa (10), and Washington (10).
Top Storage States
The top states in off-farm storage capacity include:
• Illinois: 800 facilities, with 1.68 billion bushels – No. 1 in 2023.
• Iowa: 830 facilities (the most in the nation), with 1.53 billion bushels.
• Kansas: 690 facilities, with 1.22 billion bushels.
• Nebraska: 485 facilities, with 990 million bushels.
• Minnesota: 490 facilities, with 820 million bushels.
• Texas: 410 facilities, with 610 million bushels.
• Ohio: 339 facilities, with 475 million bushels.
• North Dakota: 320 facilities, with 460 million bushels.
The top five states accounted for 53% of the nation’s off-farm storage capacity.
The number of off-farm grain storage facilities totaled 8,004 on Dec. 1, 2023, down 1% from 8,068 on Dec. 1, 2022.
