Manhattan, KS - Just as humans want a safe food supply, the FDA also sets safe standards for the animal feed industry. For the week of November 5-7, the Kansas State University IGP Institute will host the NGFA—KSU Food Safety Modernization Act Feed Industry Training program.
This training allows participants to be educated on good manufacturing practices, fundamentals of an animal food safety plan and how to create an effective animal food safety plan.
“There are many new requirements, and this course describes those requirements to participants as well as gives ideas for implementation and training to those concepts,” says Cassandra Jones, course coordinator and associate professor at Kansas State University.
Participants are also able to complete a certificate of training from the Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance (FSPCA), as well as an additional Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) training. Allowing course participants to recognize hazard analysis and preventative controls with ease.
According to past participant Maddie Tusha, plant engineer at the Kenton Nutrition Group in Columbus, Nebraska, this gave her an in-depth understanding of the reasoning behind certain protocols.
“I think diving in deep and learning the specific processes set in place was really helpful,” Tusha says.
“Now learning more about it helps me understand what the FDA looks for, and how we can help them help us.” For past participant Tom Oberreuter, plant and production manager at Hi Plains Feed, the course served as a way to refresh his knowledge on the updated FDA requirements.
“I think this is one of the best courses I’ve taken throughout my career. It was a refresher course for us and it brought up a lot of things that we are not doing, that we need to start,” Oberreuter says.
In addition to professional food safety training, the IGP Institute also offers training in grain processing and flour milling, grain marketing and risk management, and feed manufacturing and quality management.
