USDA January World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates

The USDA forecasts total corn production in Brazil at a record 109.0 million metric tons (mmt), down 1 mmt (1 percent) from last month, but up 7.0 mmt (7 percent) from last year’s record, according to the January World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report released Tuesday, Jan. 12.

Total harvested area, for both the first-season and second-season corn crops, is forecast at a record 19.5 million hectares (mha), up 1.0 mha (5 percent) from last year’s record area of 18.5 mha.

Yield is forecast at 5.59 tons per hectare (t/ha), about 1 percent higher than last year’s crop. The forecasted yield is 3 percent lower than the previous record of 5.77 t/ha in 2018/19, but up 7 percent from the 5-year average of 5.20 t/ha.
